It Was Short, But Wonderful
Tyler was released as the bishop of the Des Moines 2nd ward on Sunday, July 26th. He served for 9 short months before we received a job offer from IBM that we couldn't refuse. Well, yes we could, and we were willing to if the Lord wanted us to stay. After many prayers and fasting, we felt that the right thing to do was accept this wonderful offer and consider it a blessing from a loving Heavenly Father.
It was a bittersweet day. Tyler was very emotional from the moment we knew we'd be moving. He loved being a bishop. If you ask him why, he will say "seeing the atonement work in people's lives is the most spiritual/beautiful experiences I have ever been a part of" and he would say that he felt like he did when he served a full time mission. When President Nye asked him what he's learned from this calling, Tyler said, "I learned that the love that Heavenly Father has for each of his children is so powerful and real. He truly does love every one individually and with such instensity. And I was blessed to feel a portion of that love for all of my ward family." He also testified of the power of the atonement and how it transforms lives.
I will always remember that the very last thing that Tyler did as a bishop was to interview and sign my temple recommend. That was a special way to end his calling.
As President Nye sat with us that Sunday, he thanked Tyler for his service and gave us wonderful advice moving forward. I appreciate the words he spoke and we hold those close to our hearts. Then he looked Tyler in the eyes and officially released him. I looked at Tyler as he struggled to hold back his emotions and felt so much love for him. He wasn't perfect at his calling, as none of us are. But I know he gave it all he had. His heart expanded to a place he had never known.
We look forward to serving in new capacities and giving our hearts to wherever it is the Lord sends us next.
One of the many blessings that came with serving was getting to know the other members of the bishopric and their families better. (Justing Walker, Wayne Ross, Mica Murdoch, Austin Froerer) We had bishopric FHE's every few months when we could.
