Christmas 2013

We had a wonderful Christmas this year!  Between planning the ward party, taking finals and Christmas prep, we were very busy. It always works out, and in the end there are many memories made.  We were thankful to spend Christmas with our new family as well.
Our family is grateful for a wonderful year and have grown stronger through the joys and challenges that came our way.  We love our Savior, Jesus Christ, and know that he is the source of pure joy and happiness.

Thanksgiving in Denver

This year we were blessed to experience a snowy Thanksgiving in Denver with our some of our Mons cousins.  One perk (and probably the only one) with Tyler's constant travel is that we had enough flyer miles to take the whole family without breaking the bank.

We stayed the first night in Downtown Denver in a posh hotel.  But no matter how nice of a hotel you get, it is always a bit chaotic when you show up with 4 kids.  Lots of energy for 1 room!

The next day we made the drive to Breckenridge where we would spend the first half of the week.  Jessica and their kids drove up and stayed the last night with us.  We enjoyed the indoor poos, sledding, skiing and played our hearts out in the snow. Breckenridge won the hearts of all the kids, especially Logan.  He was smitten by the mountainous landscapes and beauty of the town.

Tyler took Logan and Mariah skiing for their first time.  He couldn't believe how quickly they caught on and before the day was over they were zipping down the slopes. It helped that they had Tanner and Carter- who are little pros- to keep up with.

Our last night there Aunt Jess treated us to ice cream and other goodies at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.  Delish!

We spent the rest of the week in Broomfield where they live and enjoyed relaxing, playing at the rec center, birthday pedis with Jess and shopping.  I don't have a picture, but Jess and I took Tanner and Mariah out for their first crazy holiday shopping experience.  We stood in line at Target in the cold for an hour and had fun talking to people around us and finding out what everyone was there for.

We were happy to be there for Aunt Jess's pie making tradition.  I was even happier to eat them!

Jake's First Visit Alone for Dinner

Mar. 2

I sent the letter last night, and obsessively checked my email all day today.  By lunch time, I still hadn’t received a response.  Tyler and I had a lot of housework and projects to keep us busy.

It was about 2:00 when we were cleaning our garage, I glanced down the street and saw a grandmother pushing a baby in the stroller.  I knew right away that it was him.  I whisper yelled to Tyler in the garage that “I see them, I see them!” and told him of my intentions to go talk to her.  He told me not to do anything of the sort and that they needed to approach us if they got the letter.  Soon, they were approaching the corner near our house, and she began to cross the street towards us.  I knew then that she had intentions of meeting us.

I walked up to her and asked, “did you get my email?”, and with a huge smile she said “yes, honey we did.  We can't believe this is happening!”  She told me that Tom was sending a reply at the very moment.  She went on to explain basically the same story that was told to Melissa and Robin.  She got choked up as she explained how hard this is for them, and I just wanted to hug her tight.  I can’t imagine being in her shoes.  She said if they were any younger, they would raise him, but they just know it’s not right for him.  He deserves a family.  Tyler and I bent down and took a look at cute little Jacob (Jake) and said hello to him.  She didn’t stay long.  As she walked away I wondered 3 things:
1.       Did she notice the Guns N Roses music blaring from the garage?

2.       What did she think of the 20 neighborhood kids literally running out of our house ever so loudly?

3.       After seeing little Jake, I turned to Tyler and asked.  Do you think you really could love this little guy as your very own.   He immediately answered, "yes, absolutely I could!"

Once she left, I ran back in the house to see if Tom had sent his reply.  My heart jumped to see the email waiting there.  Here is his response:

Dear Robyn and Tyler,

Thank you for your wonderfully touching message about an opportunity for our grandson, Jake (Jacob Robert Carter); it drew tears from both Linda and me.

Jake was one year old last Wednesday, and we know we must make difficult decisions sooner-or-later. We are much slower in coming to terms with the emotional issues of such decisions than we are the intellectual understanding of putting Jake’s long-term welfare first.
Within our family, the important parties other than Linda and me are Jake’s mother, S, who has acknowledged she cannot successfully or reliably raise him due to her medical issues, and S's brother, J , who has the primary financial responsibility for his sister and nephew. J and S are Linda’s children and my stepchildren.

Assuming there are no problems, we would like you to meet us and Jake to see whether we all should consider the opportunity for Jake that you have warm-heartedly offered.  We hope to be in touch in a day or two.

Thank you, again, for reaching out to us.

In the days between this letter and our meeting, I spent a lot of time crying and feeling a lot of anxiety and fear.  I have never dreamed of adopting, in fact, I have never wanted to.  I admire people who have, but always thought it wasn't for me.  There were many concerns to consider, but I could not deny the confirmation that I knew this was God's will.  Once I truly understood this, I was able to leave those concerns with Him and had a tangible peace throughout the process.  I was well aware of the challenges ahead, but it did not shake me.  It's the closest I have felt to God.  There have been many miracles throughout the process.  With every step of faith, the doors kept flying open.

March 12

Tonight we had a meeting with J his wife, A and Linda and Tom.  We went to 5 J’s Steakhouse out towards Spicewood.  We had a nice dinner and talked more about who we are.    They also explained a little bit about S's situation and the struggles she has had with mental illness.
When Tyler answered that he was born and raised in Utah, Tom immediately asked, “Are you Mormon?” After replying that we indeed were, the table went silent.  I knew at that moment that it was possible that the conversation would be over.  After a moment J leaned forward and said, “I’ll just get straight to the point.  I used to work at Dell, and I’ve known many Mormons who were nothing but kind, good, hard- working people.  In fact, that gives me even more comfort, because I know that Mormons are all about family.”  As he said these things, I was filled with the Spirit, once again confirming that this is right and will happen.  I had a rapid slide show in my mind of many silhouettes of LDS people who have crossed paths with this family who have, through their good examples, opened the doors for us to adopt Jake.  Another reminder of how important it is that we live up to the standards and Christ-like qualities.  You never know who you will touch- bad, or good.  Our meeting ended well, with J saying that he would like to meet with Tyler alone on Friday.

Jake. The Beginning.

I have been excited to share Jake's story.  I decided to post my journal entries rather than retell it for the blog. Here's the beginning of our miracle:

Mar. 1

Today was a typical day at home.  Actually, a little better than a typical day.  Tyler was home (a rare treat given his heavy travel schedule) and came downstairs just in time to welcome the kids as they come off the bus.  We then walked hand in hand to the mailboxes and enjoyed a nice chat.  I remember commenting to him how dang blessed we are for our great life here in Austin and for our 3 amazing kids.

We came home from our short escape from routine life.  I was in the kitchen with my apron on, and the kids were having a great time running in and out of the house with their friends.

A knock at the door, and my friend, Robin comes in to tell me what just happened to her.  She was taking a walk with her daughter, Claire, and she met a lady who was walking her little grandson.  They stopped for a nice, neighborly chat, and this woman goes on to tell Robin about how they are raising their little grandbaby who just turned 1 last week.  She shared the painful realization that being raised by older grandparents (67) would be so unfair to him, and they were starting to come to terms that adoption will be inevitable.

When Robin shared this with me, it shook me a bit.

You see, just about a month ago, my other friend and neighbor, Melissa, had just gotten home from the grocery store when I ran over to her house to chat.  She told me about a friend, Tom, that she had run into at HEB.  He was there with his little grandson, and had told her the same story.  We went on to chat about how sad and hard that situation would be.  At that time, my heart strings were pulled,  but who’s wouldn’t be, right?  I didn’t think much more of it once I left her house.

Now here I was, hearing the same story a second time, and this time, it shook me to the core.  I knew I had to talk to Tyler.

After Robin left, I relayed our conversation to him and how I felt, and he immediately responded with, “you know we have to contact this family.”

My head started to spin.  I knew he was right.  There is no other way to explain the calm other than it came straight from heaven.  The normal me would be freaking out.  I knew that I would be writing this family that evening, and was calm enough to carry on with my dinner and kid wrangling without any anxiety.

Tyler took the kids out to play basketball, and here is the letter I wrote.  It was pretty much a first draft.  I sat down and wrote what came into my mind, and didn’t analyze it much once I was done.  Again, not very typical of me when writing something so important.  Here is the letter I wrote:

Hello,

My name is Robyn Mons. I was given your contact information by my good friend, Melissa Clark, who is a resident here in Falconhead West.
I'm not quite sure where to start... I guess maybe tell you what brings me to this email. I apologize if this seems impersonal, but I wanted you to be able to read and think about this instead of talking to me on the phone or in person at first. This is in regards to your precious grandson, and I didn't want to put you on the spot.

A few months ago, I was at Melissa's house, and she had just come home from the grocery store. She told me that she had seen one of our neighbors (you) and that you were telling her about your grandson and how you were hoping to possibly find him a family. When she told me, it touched my heart, but I didn't really say anything.

Just yesterday, another friend of mine in the neighborhood, Robin Yeamans, was on a walk with her daughter when she met Linda who was taking your grandson for a walk. Robin came over to my house right after and told me about their conversation, which was similar to yours and Melissa's at the grocery store.
It didn't take me long to realize that both stories were regarding the same child. This time, not only did it touch my heart, but I felt that I needed to share these feelings with my husband. When I told my husband about this,  he immediately encouraged me to contact you.

Tyler and I have 3 beautiful children. We have a lot of love in our home and have always wanted more children, but after losing our 4th baby early on in my pregnancy, we have not been able to grow our family. We have always felt that adoption was an option for us, but felt that it would come to us, rather than going through an agency or going to a foreign land.

Neither of my neighbors knew that this was in our hearts, but both felt the need to share your conversations with me. My husband and I feel that we should at least reach out to you.

I'm not sure where you are in the process physically and emotionally in regards to finding a family for your grandson. If you truly are looking to find him a loving home and family, we would welcome the opportunity to have you over, or meet over dinner and discuss this further.

I don't want to impose or be a nuisance, so I am leaving it up to you to contact me. Either way, if you could just let me know that you did receive this, that would be great. I just want to make sure you did receive this message.
We live on ... (most people know us as the house with the kids always shooting baskets in our hoop). My phone # ...

I look forward to hearing from you.
Warmest Regards,
Robyn Mons
